In the early years of the UAAP, the Bulldogs were a competitive team in the league, winning the title in 1954. However, by the 1980s, NU started to dwell in the bottom ranking of the team standings. They had some minimal success in the late 1990s, thanks to the likes of future PBA stars Danny Ildefonso and Lordy Tugade, but failed to make it to the Final Four.
But in 2001, the Bulldogs made a surprise trip to the Final Four led by the shooting of Jeff Napa, who tied the record of UE's Allan Caidic for the most number of three-pointers made in a single UAAP game. However, they were not able to advance to the Finals as they were beaten by the La Salle Green Archers in their Final Four series.
NU has since returned to their mediocre ways. Despite that, the team saw the emergence of outstanding players such as Rey Mendoza, Edwin Asoro, both members of the Mythical Five in separate seasons, and Jonathan Fernandez, who found some success playing for the PBL's Harbour Centre squad and the SEABA RP team.
With the beginning of a new ownership, led by the SM Group of Henry Sy, the Bulldogs look to shed the tag of being "the UAAP's whipping boys."

Unknown to some, the Bulldogs have found recent success in the UAAP's baseball tournament. After years of falling to the bottom of the team standings, NU has made it to the Final Four the last three seasons. Unfortunately, it has not made it to the championship round, losing to baseball powerhouses such as the UP Fighting Maroons and the UST Growling Tigers in the semi finals.
Being the three most popular sports in UAAP, this is the school's ranking in each sport since 1987, the year the UAAP became an 8-team league: (NU doesn't participate in the Men's Football Tournament)
